Server updated from Ubuntu Xenial Xerus to Bionic Beaver

Ubuntu

I’ve been running Ubuntu server from the start ever since I’ve setup my homeserver. At the beginning I was still a bit of a noob in this territory, so I chose Ubuntu mainly for it’s familiarity. Running Ubuntu server now for almost 3 years, it’s not half bad. I don’t have much experience to compare it to other distro’s though. Next time I feel like setting things up allover again, I’d probably go for something else and more stable such as Debian.

The upgrade

Ubuntu 18.04 was already out for sometime, but from previous experience upgrading Ubuntu I decided to wait a bit. Not a bad decision I think, because considering everything, the upgrade went pretty smooth.
I just had to set up PHP a bit again, install some of the missing modules (mostly for the Nextcloud install). Also had to unfortunately downgrade my OpenJDK install to version 8 since Subsonic wasn’t playing nice with the latest and greatest.
I gave up on fixing the Pulseway daemon, since it requires LibSSL 1.0.2, and I don’t think downgrading this to an old version is such a great idea. So I decided to just live with that, since Pulseway is nice but doesn’t add much for my Linux server base.
I’m happy with the upgrade to PHP 7.2.x, I hope to spent some time on getting ApiGen to work again, since it seems to require at least PHP 7.1. Before on Xenial, I was running the PHP 7.0 branch, I hope ApiGen is supported on 7.2.x as well. Getting some documentation going for my little side project called Chell.

All in all, things went pretty smooth. Hope you guys have a good experience as well, if not feel free to drop a bomb on Twitter 🙂
