Moving JosNienhuis. GotGeeks.com to gotgeeks.nl

DtDNS shutting down

Just this week I received an e-mail from DtDNS stating that their dynamic DNS service will be shutting down, starting the first of august. Since josnienhuis.gotgeeks.com is a free (sub)domain that was provided by DtDNS, I’m forced to move to another domain. So on we go…

GotGeeks.nl domain from Strato

Strato is a pretty cheap provider and they have a decent reputation here in the Netherlands, so I signed up with them. To not completely get rid of the past, I decided to sign up for gotgeeks.nl, dot com was obviously already taken.
Setting things up always takes some time, since DNS records need to propagate to all different DNS servers. Strato also offers a free SSL certificate, and that’s in the queue to be generated. So if all the boilerplate configuration is done, I can move on to re-configuring my server.

The actual move

Some things are tight into josnienhuis.gotgeeks.com so I’ll have to spread things up a bit in Apache’s Virtual Hosts. That way both domains can exist side by side, and I can provide for an easier transition. I of course aim to have everything done before the shutdown of DtDNS, but most likely (since I’m off this week) I’ll get it done this week.

Till DtDNS shuts down for good, I’ll have a redirect on that domain to the new gotgeeks.nl domain.

A little thank you to DtDNS

DtDNS has served me well for a number of years already. Their service was easy to use, free and having DDWRT support for refreshing my dynamic IP was very helpful. So cheers DtDNS, thanks for all your hard work, I hate to see you go.
It’s a little sad it has to end like this – especially with the reasons provided; “A few bad actors”… – but at least this page will remain in the internet archive for many years to come. Just as a reminder for how awesome you guys were!
